Erin and I have been friends for years and years. She was a bridesmaid in my wedding, we’ve celebrated so many birthdays together, hosted each other’s baby showers. But by far, the most meaningful thing we shared together was when she invited me into her birth space to capture the arrival of her sweet baby girl. It was an absolutely beautiful birth (and so fast!), and she was so incredibly strong and brave through the whole experience. This absolutely amazing experience was once-in-a-lifetime, and I feel so blessed to be the one who captured her birth story.
Capturing the birth itself was incredibly powerful, but some of my favorite images from our time together were captured in the time after birth. This time together was similar to what we would capture in a Fresh 48, taken in the hours and days after birth. In this time, there was still such a sense in the room of something magical happening; new life had just arrived, and I was in awe being able to capture these amazing post-birth moments.
Welcoming someone into your birth space, either during birth or after, can be very vulnerable, and I am so grateful this family chose to preserve their memories of this time. This little girl is going to be able to see right from the start how much she was adored, and I think that is priceless. From Good Samaritan to Christ to Bethesda North and beyond, I feel so grateful to be back in hospitals celebrating families.
