Your Guide to an In-Home Newborn Session | Cincinnati Newborn Photographer

Levy Family | Kenwood, Ohio

A lot of families get overwhelmed at the prospect of an in-home newborn session. What if my house doesn’t have good light? What if I’m too stressed after baby is born to clean the house? What types of shot can you even get of baby if they’re not posed?

Well, the Levy family had a perfect in-home newborn session. Danielle and Bryan are absolutely lovely, and they had so much love and excitement in their home. They are a perfect example of how to do everything right for a newborn session, and I’m going to share all those helpful tips and tricks in this post!

For this session, and most in-home newborn sessions, I only use a few areas of the home. We spend most of our time in the nursery, where we capture all the details of your new little baby, from nursery décor to tiny fingers and toes. The second area I tend to use is the master bedroom for lifestyle family portraits (like the one above) and to pose your new baby on. I occasionally will use a window (either in the master bedroom or another room) for silhouette images. It’s so important not to stress about having your house perfect and spotless for your newborn session; just a few uncluttered areas and an adorable nursery are all we need!

Now, what about baby? How do we get images of your little one without doing the posed and wrapped look? I utilize lifestyle newborn photography, meaning I capture your baby just as they are. No poses or props. To keep your baby comfortable, I try to shoot within the first ten days of baby’s life (before fussiness and baby acne set in!). I recommend setting your thermostat a few degrees warmer than what’s comfortable for us, which will keep your baby nice and toasty. I also utilize white noise and the swaddles, crib, and space you already have in your home to capture unposed newborn images. I mean, just look at how precious sweet Carter is!

And the number one way we’ll keep your baby comfortable? By keeping them close to you. Natural images of you snuggling, kissing, and just breathing in the newness of your baby are ones you’ll treasure for a lifetime. Little Bug newborn session are very baby-led; whether we need to pause for feeding or changing, or you need to change your shirt (spit up happens, after all), we’re never rushed for time. It’s all about just capturing your family just the way you are.

The Levy’s newborn session was absolutely perfect, and yours can be too. If you’re expecting and want to chat more about a Cincinnati in-home newborn session, reach out here. Those newborn days feel long, but they go by so fast; together we can preserve the sweetness of those days.
